Female chorus from Berlin - established 2008
The Women in Black chorus stands for thrilling barbershop sound from the German capital. Under the musical direction of Francis Schmutzler, around 30 singers tell tales of endless love, one-night stands, longing, sunshine – and chocolate. With a repertoire including rock and pop, jazz and classical music, they cover a broad spectrum of different genres, ranging from sentimental polecats over catchy swing ballads to rousing dance tunes, all the way to German "Schlager" and even late 20th-century pop. Their songs bring their audience to dream, groove, indulge and enjoy.
Founded in 2008 by barbershop aficionado Steve Hepner – assistant principal at the Kennedy School in Berlin at the time – the Women in Black are a truly American-German chorus – reflecting the strong historical bonds forged between the US and Berlin.
